Knowing What to Ask

People often understand that dementia brings about memory loss; however, they rarely understand what that means.  When a person with Alzheimer’s or Dementia experiences memory loss, the most recent memories are often the first to deteriorate.  While they may not be able to tell you what they had for lunch yesterday, they will most likely be able to discuss their childhood in detail during the early stages of the disease (“Coping”).  With this in mind, the most effective questions you can ask your loved one are questions about their past. Below are some ideas for conversation starters.  Feel free to use these or formulate your own. Be aware, however, that as the disease progresses, even childhood memories start to fade so you may need to adjust these questions over time. By formatting these questions on to cardstock, I created a deck of 3.5 x 4.0 inch game cards to place in my Talk To Me Treasure Boxes.
